5 Tips To Teaching Math Effectively

This is a very helpful article to review before getting my first teaching job. This article informs teachers not only how to teach their students math, but also how to teach their students math effectively. The article informs the reader that the first thing that should be taught to students is to make sure they know how to think first, and always remember to think about your students age. Is this material you are teaching an appropriate level for the students. Is it below their age level or above their level? I will incorporate what this article says in my classroom by making sure I am not giving my students easy material that will bore them. I will give my students work that challenges them, but isn't impossible for them. I will create fun math games for my students and I will relate to them. I will make sure I am giving my class real life problems and show them that what they are learning is necessary. I will refer back to this article periodically so I can make sure I am teaching my students math effectively.

My view: Ten myths about gifted students and programs for gifted

This is a great article to follow up on. I will check with myself often. "Am I treating my gifted students like this article?" This article is very interesting due to the fact that I never considered some of these things. Most teachers want to think gifted students are well behaved and are working up to their potential, these are all misconceptions. I will use this in my classroom when working with my gifted students. I will challenge them and I won't forget about them. Some teachers think that since some of their students are gifted, they won't have to teach them. They won't have to work one on one with them like the rest of the class. This is a huge misconception. I will make sure I have differentiation in my classroom. I never knew this, but when gift students are learning material they already know, they begin to get frustrated. I will change this by always having challenging stuff for them to work on. If I am teaching the class the lattice method, I will give them larger numbers to work with.

Lattice Multiplication

Parents,

The beginning of next week, your child will be learning lattice multiplication. This is a really cool method to use when multiplying bigger numbers. I think the class will really have fun with this unit. Lattice multiplication is a lot easier than the regular way of multiplying big numbers. I wanted to give you a chance to overview the lattice method before your child brings it home to you. I even think you will find this as cool as I do!

A Well Managed Classroom By Harry Wong

An amazing resource for teachers. This article helps reinforce the first day of school. Wong suggests telling your students what you want them to do on day one. He also suggests to give your class time to practice your rules. Teacher need to stand at the door and welcome each one of their students. This article will help me refresh my memory on classroom management. This article is an outstanding resource, and gives an overview of Wong's book The First Days of School. I will use this in my classroom to reinforce classroom management. I will use Wong's tips and suggestions. For example, I will give my class a schedule so they have no surprises on what is coming. They will know what the next activity will be after math. I will already have a prompt for my students to work on as soon as they come in the classroom, this way the students are on task. I will work on practicing my expectations with my students so if I needed to step in the hallway or answer a phone call, they would know what to do.

Tech Integrated Everyday Math

Parents,

I have received some concerns that you don't know how to help your children with their math homework that they have been bring home. Recently this week, your child has learned a new method of adding. The children love this new method, but shared with me that their parents had never heard of this particular method. I have attached a link that will help you see how scratch addition is done, this site breaks the problem down showing you examples of how scratch addition works. You may find that you like this method a lot better than old school addition.

Parents Resources for Helping Your Child With Math Skills

Parents,

Many of you have been asking me how you can help your child with math at home. Here are some great articles that have great activities that you and your child can do together to learn math. Some of the activities are activities that you probably already do together, like grocery shopping or cooking. Instead of you writing the list or measuring the ingredients, let your child do it. You will be benefiting your child with practicing their math skills and spending quality time with her son or daughter. It is a WIN WIN!
